Are You a Fan of Banana Leaf Meals?
Team Bhavya Desai Illustrations says hi, at the end of the newsletter.
I've called Chennai home for over 20 years, ever since my family moved here from Coonoor, Tamil Nadu, in 1998. This city, with its culinary contrasts, offers everything from sumptuous seafood to traditional vegetarian fare. Being a blend of Gujarati and Tamil influences, I have a particular soft spot for seafood.
During the lockdown, I found myself missing the local food served on banana leaves.
The tradition of using banana leaves as plates dates back thousands of years across Asia. Historically, these leaves were used for their practicality and natural antibacterial properties, which help keep food fresh. In many cultures, meals served on banana leaves are a sign of festivity and respect. The large surface of the leaf also allows for a communal style of eating, which is integral to many traditional celebrations.
Inspired by my cravings, I illustrated a meal served on a banana leaf.
If you're as fond of this dining style as I am, you'll be excited to know that this design is now available on a T-shirt.
It took me a long time to get to the point where I felt comfortable seeing my illustrations turned into merchandise that people could purchase. I plan to discuss my journey in future newsletters.
For now, all I want to do is share this little accomplishment with you. It's a perfect way to carry a piece of Chennai’s culinary charm wherever you go!
